Review: CK One Color Mascara

CK Mascara

I finally decided to whip out my free birthday mascara and try this sucker out! As part of Ulta’s Rewards Program, you will receive a voucher in your email during your birthday month for a free full size Calvin Klein mascara. I was super excited to try this out but wanted to wait until I was done using my other mascaras since they do dry out after 3 months of usage. I love free high/mid-end mascaras!

CK One Color Mascara – “Precision curved brush and patented lycra technology amplifies, shapes, and lifts every lash for maximum volume. Customize lash looks with a unique twist brush applicator. Select definition or volume with a twist of the cap in this all-in-one mascara. Delivers buildable full lashes that remain soft and supple stroke-by-stroke. Ophthalmologist tested. Dermatologist tested. Safe for contact lens wearers.”

This mascara comes in a velvet-matte feeling tube. The packaging feels the same as NARS packaging, which means that this well get dirty rather quickly. This is available in 5 shades (True Black, Soft Black, Brown, Violet, and Blue), but the free birthday mascara comes in the shade 800 Show, which is True Black. The first thing I noticed was a sticker on the very tip of the cap which stated “Twist here.” I thought that seemed very strange, but then magic ensued. The wand twists into different shapes! How freaking awesome is that?! I had no idea that a mascara wand could even do that.

The wand contains many wide-set tiny bristles, but when you twist it, the bristles become closer together. This is what is meant by having both definition and volume. Having the wand in its normal position allows for lash separation, and when you twist the wand, you get voluminous lashes from having the bristles so close together. However, this was just my theory. When I tried this out, I was actually pretty disappointed. Yes, I got easy separation and there was no flaking, but that was pretty much it. This didn’t give my lashes volume whatsoever. I barely got any length, and this seemed to weigh my lashes down. Because this is more of a wet-formula mascara, I knew that I would have smudging on my eyelids and under my eyes, and I was right. I do not recommend this for bottom lashes AT ALL. You will end up with raccoon eyes. This also was a bit difficult to remove. I suggest using eye makeup remover instead of just normal facial wash to take this mascara off.

I think this mascara will work better for those with already long and full-looking lashes. However, those of us with barely-there lashes will not find anything special with this mascara. Since this is free during your birthday month, I suggest trying it out. However, I wouldn’t recommending shelling out $18 for this mediocre mascara.
