As part of Sephora’s Beauty Insider rewards program, during your birthday month you are able to receive a couple of free deluxe minis of various products. This year, those products are the Make Up For Ever Rouge Artist Natural Lipstick and the Smoky Extravagant Mascara. Last year’s birthday samples included Benefit’s They’re Real mascara, which I enjoyed for the most part except that it is an extremely wet formula so it was hard to work with. I love trying out high-end mascaras because I always get my mascaras from the drugstore so this seems like a treat for me!
Make Up For Ever Smoky Extravagant Mascara is said to be “A precision mascara that adds volume, length, and curl. This mascara delivers long-lasting wear with no clumping in one stroke. Using 4D technology, an exclusive microdefining wax complex envelopes the lash surface in ultrablack pigments for far-away impact and up-close precision. The dual-purpose, cone-shaped brush has a precision tip that separates lashes as the rounded base creates extravagant volume from any distance.”
The wand of this mascara is very large and cone-shaped, which is very different than your typical straight, rectangular mascara wand. It tapers off into a small tip which makes it easy to coat inner corner lashes. It is made of fiber bristles instead of plastic bristles and is a wet formula (however, not as wet at Benefit’s They’re Real mascara). Even though this is wet and has a large wand, I didn’t find it to be messy when coating my upper lashes. This left my lashes very glossy and volumized, which I enjoyed, but I wish it made my lashes a little longer as well. This is a great mascara for those who already have long lashes. I would suggest to pair this with a lengthening mascara for those of us with short, stubby lashes.
I like that this held a curl all day, didn’t leave smudges on my eyelids, and left no flakes. This was also extremely easy to remove at the end of the day. However, this was terrible on my bottom lashes. Not only was it difficult to coat my bottom lashes without getting mascara everywhere, this smudged like crazy under my eyes. I like using another mascara for my bottom lashes when paired with this mascara. I just find it time-consuming to have to use a different mascara for my bottom lashes and also a lengthening mascara when using this Smoky Extravagant mascara. This was nothing special and you can definitely find something better at the the drugstore for less than half the price.
